The South China Sea is the marginal sea covering an area of about 3,500,000 km2. It is a semi-enclosed body of water connecting the Indian Ocean on the left, and the Pacific Ocean on the right. This area is rich in biodiversity, oil and gas as well as mineral reserves, and is also busy with shipping activities as it connects the southeast and northeast Asia. It faces severe environmental degradation due to pollution and population pressures in its littoral states and has prompted multiple marine scientific studies to be conducted in the area. Nonetheless, most of the studies were carried out in the northern part of the South China Sea due to large funding and high-end facilities. Although there are studies in the southern part, most were neither integrated nor well-documented. Henceforth, a series of multi-disciplinary studies have been conducted in the Malaysian waters of the South China Sea by INOS, UMT to study the environmental parameters of this area which cover the estuarine, coastal and off shore areas. Besides the chemical, biological and geological data, the ocean governance solutions in managing the area have also been proposed. The readers of the book would be able to find invaluable information regarding this part of the Malaysian waters.
