Amid the outcry over firms prioritizing economic gains at the expense of environmental welfare, Green Human Resource Management (Green HRM) has been posited as a ticket for firms to achieve all pillars of sustainability, allowing them to generate profits to remain competitive and diminish their operations’ harmful effects to protect the society and the environment. Green HRM has been a subject of a number of studies, with some successfully published as research books. However, few studies have been conducted among large manufacturing firms in developing countries such as Malaysia, and even less managed to be published as research books. This is where this research book comes in and contributes.
The authors have documented a Green HRM study conducted among Malaysian large manufacturing firms. Deemed ground-breaking, the study is one of the first that integrated the stakeholder theory with the resource-based theory, allowing for better explanation of adoption patterns of Green HRM practices. Guided by these theories, the study endeavoured to establish, through hypothesis testing, if stakeholder pressure, relative advantage, top management commitment, and capital (i.e., green human capital, green structural capital, green relational capital) influence Green HRM practices (i.e., green analysis and description of job position, green recruitment, green selection, green training, green performance assessment, green rewards). Also, the study sought to prove whether Green HRM practices influence the firms' sustainability in terms of economic, environmental, and social performances.
The authors expound on Green HRM and sustainability, describe the study, present its results, discuss its findings, consider its theoretical and practical implications, and recommend the directions for future research. This research book is suitable for students, academicians, researchers, practitioners, and policy makers who may use the study's findings as a basis for conducting future studies or for introducing related policies and regulations.
