This field guide entitled Marine Fishes of Kuantan: Malaysia Biodiversity Information System (MyBIS) has been written specifically to highlight the astonishing variety of marine fishes found at our nation’s fish landing jetty of the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM). The species presented in this book were described mainly from specimens collected with trawling activity and other gears, together with few photo records.

This book celebrates a total of 256 marine fish species from 79 families with 2 critically endangered (CR), 4 vulnerable (VU), 9 near threatened (NT), 174 least concern (LC), 17 data deficient (DD) and 50 not evaluated (NE) as per International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species status.

All these marine fishes are the merriment and liveliness of the coastal waters and its surrounding areas, with 12 species, Paraplagusia bilineata (Bloch, 1787) (Cynoglossidae), Cypselurus naresii (Günther, 1889) (Exocoetidae), Hyporhamphus affinis (Günther, 1866) (Hemiramphidae), Tetrapturus angustirostris Tanaka, 1915 (Istiophoridae), Lethrinus microdon Valenciennes, 1830 (Lethrinidae), Pempheris molucca Cuvier, 1829 (Pempheridae), Cymbacephalus bosschei (Bleeker, 1860) (Platycephalidae), Pennahia pawak (Lin, 1940) (Sciaenidae), Scorpaenopsis macrochir Ogilby, 1910 (Scorpaenidae), Aesopia cornuta Kaup, 1858 and Zebrias crossolepis Zheng & Chang, 1965 (Soleidae) and Tylerius spinosissimus (Regan, 1908) (Tetraodontidae), represent the first records from the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

It is believed that our exceptionally rich marine fishes remain underexplored. There is still much in the sea to be rejoiced as our nation become one of the biodiversity hotspot countries. We hope this field guide will help readers to recognize, appreciate and preserve the beauty of the marine fishes that are associated with the coastal waters of the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Malaysia.
